There had long been rumours that US rapper Ye / Kanye West was planning to perform in Russia.
The musician has now announced two concerts in St. Petersburg, as the Moscow Times reported. Since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine began in February 2022, Western artists have avoided performing in Russia. However, the controversial move fits the image of the scandal-plagued musician.
In recent years, the US rapper has attracted attention, among other things, for antisemitic statements. In that context, numerous concerts in Europe were cancelled. But it is quite conceivable that he would be welcomed with more open arms in Russia in particular. Even a meeting between the musician and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin would be possible, according to Russian MP Svetlana Zhurova. In any case, it seems Kanye West is said to be "dreaming" of such a meeting, according to the organisers.
The concerts are planned for 10 and 11 October at the Gazprom Arena in Putin's home city. The venue can accommodate up to 80,000 people. Both concerts are said to be sold out, with even the more expensive VIP tickets, costing the equivalent of around €1,600, reportedly gone.
