German techno star Paul Kalkbrenner brought his signature energy to Luxembourg on Friday evening, captivating a crowd of around 7,000 fans at the Luxexpo Open Air. With a career spanning over two decades, Kalkbrenner has become one of the most influential figures in electronic music, regularly headlining renowned festivals and sold-out venues across Europe, and Luxembourg remains a recurring stop on his tour calendar.

The night kicked off at 10.15pm, following a warm-up set by French DJ Leblanc. As temperatures hovered around a pleasant 20°C, fans wasted no time immersing themselves in Kalkbrenner's melodic techno, celebrating well into the night.

Launching his set with No Goodbye, Kalkbrenner immediately drew the audience in. True to his trademark style, he appeared on stage in sportswear and a broad grin, his ever-present cigarettes in hand, an image now synonymous with his live performances.

For nearly two hours, the Berlin native maintained a high-energy atmosphere, seamlessly blending crowd favourites like Cloud Rider, his remix of Stromae’s Te Quiero, and global hits Sky and Sand and Feed Your Head. The excitement peaked as Feed Your Head played as the penultimate track, with the crowd responding enthusiastically before Sky and Sand provided a fitting, atmospheric close to the night.

Fame from Berlin Calling (2008)

Widely regarded as one of Germany's leading techno artists, Kalkbrenner stands out from many DJs by focusing on live performances of his own productions rather than only mixing tracks from other artists.

His reputation soared beyond the techno scene in 2008 with the release of the cult film Berlin Calling, in which Kalkbrenner took on the lead role of DJ Ickarus. The film's soundtrack, featuring hits like Sky and Sand, propelled him to international fame.

In 2025, Kalkbrenner released his ninth studio album, The Essence, which includes a collaboration with Belgian singer Stromae. The album showcases his ongoing musical evolution while retaining his distinctive sound. Nearly 20 further dates are scheduled on his tour this autumn, with the Luxembourg show standing out as one of the few exclusive solo performances between major festival appearances.

At Luxexpo Open Air, the 49-year-old Berlin native reaffirmed his place among Europe’s top techno acts, bringing the concert to a triumphant close just after midnight to resounding applause from the audience.
