A tragedy unfolded on Saturday in the late afternoon in the city center of Thionville after a 30-year-old woman set herself on fire and was seriously burned. She remains in a critical condition.

A 30-year-old woman set herself on fire, prompting a rapid emergency response, on Saturday at around 6pm on Rue de la Paix, near the Grande Allée Raymond-Poincaré in the city center of Thionville.

According to information reported by Le Républicain Lorrain, a resident attempted to help the victim using a blanket before firefighters and a SMUR emergency medical team arrived. The woman suffered third-degree burns over her entire body.

She was taken into care in a critical condition and transferred to the severe burns unit at Mercy Hospital near Metz. As of midday on Sunday, no update on her condition had been released.

According to initial findings of the investigation, the woman had reportedly parked her vehicle nearby before exiting and dousing herself with petrol from a canister. The reasons for her act are not known at this stage. Her place of residence has not been specified.
