The association of Luxembourgish medical students (ALEM) held several workshops on Saturday, which focused on work perspectives and specialisation opportunities in the Grand Duchy.
ALEM president Julie Zangarini noted that the creation of additional specialisation options can help bring more students back to Luxembourg. Out of around 30 medical specialisations, only three can be completed in the Grand Duchy at the moment: general practitioner, neurologist, and oncologist.
Medical students tend to be in their early thirties by the time they embark on this final phase of their education. This means that many of them plan on settling down around that time and are therefore often forced to look for options outside of Luxembourg. Another issue concerns the work conditions of assistant doctors, which could be improved to attract more people to Luxembourg.
ALEM members further expressed hopes that one day, a complete medical degree can be done at the University of Luxembourg. At the moment, only the first three years can be completed in the Grand Duchy.
