The Athénée secondary school in Luxembourg City has been pushing its pupils to think outside the box for years, encouraging them to participate in activities beyond the classic curriculum and showing them how to take an interest in their surroundings, as part of their 'development project'.

For the past decade, the Athénée secondary school has been running a development project designed to broaden pupils' education beyond the standard curriculum.

The goal is to educate children beyond the regular school classes, using a variety of different activities, field trips and input from outside.

In 2016, then-headteacher Jos Salentiny introduced the development project, to motivate students to show more commitment to other topics both in and out of the secondary school. But setting up and running a project throughout the years requires intense coordination.

As the project can only function in an interdisciplinary way, teachers have to work hand in hand to adapt the curriculum to each year's themes. This year, the themes are altruism and democracy.

The school will be celebrating a milestone and the 140th birthday of Robert Schuman on 29 June with a photography exhibition in Merl Park. Ahead of the celebration, RTL accompanied a class participating in the project.

First, the pupils learned how to bind books at a printer's, creating volumes featuring photography and poetry made by their fellow students at the school. Former students attended the session as well, with many recalling fond memories of their own time spent working on the projects.

Next, an RTL team attended a talk held by Anne Calteux, Head of Representation of the EU in Luxembourg, at the school on European Youth Week, discussing sustainable textiles and being a young person in the EU.

The project seeks to provide pupils with the skills to motivate themselves, to express themselves, and present themselves in other ways. The project pushes staff to be creative and innovative, passing these qualities on to the children.

The project also engages former pupils, such as one former student who is now documenting the project on film.
