As the Carnival holidays begin, 61,000 passengers are travelling with Luxair this weekend, with strong demand for sunny destinations such as the Canary Islands, Marrakech, and Egypt.

The Carnival holidays began in Luxembourg on 14 February, prompting many residents to head off on a winter break.

Around 61,000 passengers are travelling with Luxair this weekend to reach their holiday destinations. According to Luxair’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Thomas Fischer, this represents an increase of around 5% compared with the same Carnival holiday period last year. He noted that people clearly have a strong appetite for travel and are keen to escape the current weather conditions.

Fischer also observed a surge in bookings for short weekend breaks, with demand rising noticeably for destinations such as Vienna. Marrakech is another winter destination seeing clear growth, he said.

While some travellers are heading to ski resorts, others are opting for sunshine to recharge their batteries. The Canary Islands remain particularly popular, with Tenerife and Las Palmas standing out as especially sought-after destinations, according to Fischer.

On Saturday morning alone, between 6am and 7am, 13 aircraft departed from Luxembourg Airport. Flights were bound for Palma, Porto, Agadir, Madeira and even Dubai.

Fischer added that Egypt continues to perform well, and somewhat unexpectedly, southern Italy is experiencing strong growth. He said that Catania, in particular, is attracting increasing numbers of winter tourists.
