Focal points of the meeting were rising energy costs, the European rule of law, as well as warm words of goodbye for the outgoing Chancellor.
During the press conference that followed the meeting, Merkel praised the bilateral relations between both countries and expressed gratitude for the help and support that the Grand Duchy offered during the July floods, which cost 196 Germans their lives.
The politicians also discussed pertinent issues from the upcoming EU summit, which include countermeasures to the rising energy costs within the Union, as well as efforts to balance the freedom of individual member states with their common commitment to the rule of law.
The conversation ended with the following statement from PM Bettel: “Chancellor or not, you will always be welcome in Luxembourg, and we are already looking forward to hosting you whenever it suits you best.” The Luxembourgish politician then concluded by commending Merkel for her relentless efforts to support Luxembourg, the European Union, and countries beyond the continent.
