Which lessons can be learned from the flood disaster in mid-July and the government’s handling of the situation?
On Thursday, Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding and Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg presented a report to the MPs of the Parliamentary Commission for the Environment and the Parliamentary Commission for Home Affairs. The report makes several suggestions regarding communication, concluding that improvements are necessary.
Right after the floods, the question was raised why the ‘GouvAlert’ warning system was not triggered earlier. In the future, the government wants to clarify regulations regarding communication channels to ensure that vital information reaches residents more quickly.
However, following the presentation of the report, MPs of the opposition parties expressed their dissatisfaction with the findings and demanded a second, more independent report. As an example, they referred to the way the situation is handled in Belgium.
