The app, which was released in October 2018, is designed to help emergency services locate people in need, among other things.

On Tuesday night, a woman found herself disoriented after a car accident, and was advised by 112 operators to use the app "GouvAlert.lu" to help them locate her.

The app has several important functions. It can be used to contact emergency services while transmitting location data and the caller's phone number to the operator.

A regular phone call to 112 requires more work to situate the caller, as the information available to operators revolves around the person's home address, rather than their current location. This can only be accurately transmitted through the app.

The app also sends notifications when there is a crisis at national level, as well as location-specific notifications, such as warnings of fire in the area. No personal details are transmitted via the app.

The app was downloaded by 10,000 people in the first 3 months alone, with 350 people using the location function in the last six months.
