An inmate deliberately started a fire at Schrassig Prison on Friday afternoon, causing significant material damage but no injuries, according to the prison administration.

An inmate deliberately started a fire at Luxembourg Prison Centre in Schrassig on Friday afternoon, according to a press release issued by the prison administration.

The incident occurred at around 3.45pm on 8 May.

According to the press release, the fire was quickly brought under control thanks to the swift and professional response of prison officers present on site. No injuries were reported.

However, the material damage caused by the fire was described as significant.

The judicial authorities, the Grand Ducal Police, and the Ombudsman, in their capacity as external controller of places of detention, have been informed. A judicial investigation has been opened.
