Henley Passport IndexLuxembourg remains in top three of countries with the most 'powerful' passports

Passports are considered 'powerful' if they give access to several countries without the need for a visa. Luxembourg remains at the top of the list.

In addition to restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, travel can also be synonymous with administrative formalities before even getting on the plane or booking a ticket. Some people will therefore opt for destinations with less complicated entry requirements.

Thanks to a ‘powerful’ passport, many countries are accessible without the need for a visa. Every year, the Henley Passport Index analyses the number of countries open to a passport holder without a visa.

The 2021 ranking does not include any big changes, with Japan still very strong in first position since 2018 but now tied with Singapore (+1 place since 2020). Their passports offer visa-free access to 192 countries.

Germany is second, as is South Korea (190 countries). Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Spain follow in third place with 189 countries.

France is fifth, dropping two places since 2018, as are Portugal, and the Netherlands with 187 countries accessible without a visa. Belgium is sixth (186 countries).

In last place is a country that has been in 116th position since 2010: Afghanistan.
