Back in 2005, the United Nations decided to mark 27 January as the memorial day for all the victims of the Holocaust.

More than one million individuals were killed by the Nazi regime in the largest concentration camp Auschwitz, which today is synonymous of the Holocaust, the mass murder of the Jews during World War II.

Luxembourg, too, commemorated the victims of the genocide

On Sunday morning, a ceremony was held where Esch-sur-Alzette’s synagogue used to be located. It was the only public ceremony in Luxembourg, organised by the Jewish community of Esch-sur-Alzette, the National Museum of the Resistance and the City of Esch. A number of politicians, including Corinne Cahen and Taina Bofferding, attended the ceremony.

Holocaust survivor Gerd Klestadt gave a moving speech in which he also referred to the current dangerous political movements in the world as well as the ignorance of numerous individuals. Klestadt expressed his belief that people must be more enlightened on issues such as the Holocaust.

Rocks were laid down as a way of commemorating the 125 Jews that were deported from Esch-sur-Alzette.
