According to Eurostat data, 83% of Luxembourg residents aged 15 and over took at least one leisure trip. This places the Grand Duchy among the European leaders, just behind the Netherlands at 84% and level with Finland and Sweden at 83%.
This high level of participation confirms a trend already seen in previous years. Luxembourg residents travel frequently and, above all, they travel abroad. Luxembourg has the highest rate of outbound tourism in the European Union, with 83% of residents taking at least one trip outside the country. This is significantly higher than in other member states, where international travel often remains less common.
This appetite for travelling abroad comes as Europe's tourism sector continues to recover. After collapsing during the pandemic in 2020, tourism participation gradually returned to its previous levels, supported by the lifting of restrictions and renewed confidence among travellers. In 2024, 65% of Europeans travelled, but Luxembourg was well above this average, confirming its status as a highly mobile country.
Another notable point is that, although Luxembourg residents travel abroad frequently, they do not neglect domestic trips. The country has a relatively balanced distribution between domestic and international travel, although foreign trips remain dominant. This is supported by Luxembourg's proximity to several major European tourist destinations and by its high standard of living, which makes travel more accessible.
Against a European backdrop marked by major disparities, with participation ranging from 84% in the Netherlands to just 28% in Romania, Luxembourg stands out as one of the countries where tourism is most firmly embedded in everyday life. This reflects both the financial means of households and their cultural openness and willingness to travel beyond national borders.
