The sentence is slightly more lenient than the one demanded by the prosecution, which had asked for 25 years in prison for the man. The defendant will also have to pay a total of €62,500 in damages to three civil parties.
In 1997, a 35-year-old security officer was gunned down in the City Concorde parking lot.
He had been in pursuit of a gang of robbers who had just stolen a briefcase containing around 2 million Luxembourgish francs (about €50,000). When he tried to stop their getaway car, the security officer was shot twice out of the Renault 21.
The man died as a result of his injuries, but the court did not conclude that the defendant was the one who fired the fatal shots.
