This was revealed in the answer by the Ministry for the Environment to a parliamentary question posed by Democratic Party MP Gusty Graas.

The reason for the sales ban lies in a leak that occurred on 19 November 2018 at the Shell petrol station. 8,000 litres of AdBlue diesel additive had leaked out - and it was not the first incident of this kind at the petrol station.

In June 2016, some 55,000 litres of AdBlue, an additive that is supposed to reduce emissions in diesel vehicles, had leaked out at the exact same petrol station.

After this incident, the Ministry for the Environment halted the sale of the product and the station was regularly inspected to make sure that it adhered to certain conditions.

In the most recent incident, the environmental and water authorities were only notified two days after the the leak on 21 November 2018. This resulted in another sales ban, that will only be lifted if the petrol station owner can prove that he is taking the necessary measures, minister Carole Dieschbourg explained.

Luckily, no AdBlue diesel additive leaked into the surrounding environment.

According to the latest information, the majority of the petrol additive went in to the sewer system.
