These roads are marked with large street signs and in some cases metal barriers.

In December 2018, the decision of the roads and bridges department, which is based on a Grand Ducal regulation from 2007, already caused confusion in the communes of Contern and Hesperange.

After last weekend's severe car crash on one of these ungritted roads, the CR226 between Contern and Itzig, the mayor of Hesperange wanted an answer as to why this road is no longer being gritted.

With temperatures well below zero, roads are unsurprisingly slippery and icy. Transport Minister François Bausch replied to the parliamentary question, saying that the ministry is hoping to grit all of these roads again in the future, but for Hesperange mayor Marc Lies, this answer was not satisfactory.

He expressed disbelief at the fact that the CR226 was not being treated as a "priority road", since thousands of cars drive there every day: "If this is not a "priority road", then I don't know what is."

Another bone of contention is the fact that the local fire department is also situated on the CR226 which is currently not being gritted.

Minister Bausch replied that a study would need to be carried out in the case to establish whether or not the regulation should be amended.
