"It is necessary", "it should have come earlier", but also "restaurants should have remained open". There are a variety of opinions on the new measures.

New restrictions came into place this Thursday to help contain the virus, effective until 15 December.

Cinemas and gyms are closed, restaurants and cafés can only offer take away or delivery, while the number of guests allowed at home has been reduced to 2. The situation will be reassessed in 2 to 3 weeks. RTL has asked people on the street what they think of the new measures.

The results have been mixed. Some agree the restrictions were necessary, others even think they were overdue, for others still they are going too far.

What do you think of the new Covid measures?
D'Leit zu Lëtzebuerg si gedeelter Meenung, wat déi nei Restriktiounen ugeet. Déi eng hale se fir gutt, déi aner fir iwwerdriwwen a fir nees ass et ze spéit.

Our German neighbours have decided to extend their "lockdown light" until 20 December and to temporarily loosen the restrictions between Christmas and New Years Eve, where up to 10 people will be allowed to gather. After this, the measures will be extended into January. In Luxembourg, the Covid rules for the holidays have not yet been determined.

Most people we spoke to were hoping that everything will reopen by then and that it will be possible to celebrate Christmas with the family or in restaurants. Some think it possible that everything will close once more after the holidays, similar to Germany. Everyone agrees that it is important for the population to stay healthy.

Schools in Luxembourg will remain open, with older students being offered alternative classes either at school or homeschooling. Opinions are divided, too, on whether school should close down completely. Some think it important that kids go to school so as not to fall behind, while others agree schools should close if infections rise too much.

A curfew between 11pm and 6am and stricter mask rules have been in place since late October.
