Stëmm vun der StroossPandemic takes hefty toll on underprivileged members of society

RTL Today
This effect is felt at the homeless charity "Stëmm vun der Strooss". The number of people being served a daily warm meal has nearly doubled from 70 to 130.

In a previous interview, director Alexandra Oxacelay said:

"The numbers have been constantly increasing recently, as poverty is on the rise. Why is it obvious? There are ever fewer job positions for people without a diploma, those who don't speak the languages or those who are ill or cannot work eight hours a day. Additionally, there is not enough affordable or social housing for people on low incomes. We are not an island. Our services are needed more and more. The only difference this year is that it is now more difficult to meet people's needs."

Luc Sonntag, who has been coming to the Stëmm for over six years, suffered from a serious burnout that turned his life upside down. Before he worked as an electrician, then as a care worker and for the postal service. Sonntag would like to get himself an own apartment, but the current situation makes matters difficult.

D'Clientë vun der Stëmm si voller Luef fir d'Aarbecht vun der Organisatioun an anerer Hëllefsaktiounen.

A place to live and work - two wishes many individuals have that come to the organisation. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the organisation was no longer permitted to let anyone in. Now, guests have to eat swiftly and not come into close contact with each other.

Guests are thankful for the organisation's work, as well as for the winter action in Findel, where the homeless can return to sleep. At the moment, however, an indoor place to gather at a safe distance remains missing.
