A contingent of Romanian police officers will be deployed in Luxembourg from 1 May for a period of six months, working under the authority of and alongside the Grand Ducal Police. The details were confirmed by Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden in response to a parliamentary question from his party colleague Laurent Mosar.
The joint patrols are intended to tackle organised and, in Mosar’s words, aggressive begging in the capital and elsewhere in the country, with the broader aim of tracing such networks back to their organisers. The Romanian officers will also be on hand to communicate directly with any Romanian nationals found begging.
The deployment is not purely one-directional, however. Gloden noted that the Grand Ducal Police is keen to learn from its Romanian counterparts, particularly in the field of cybercrime.
The Romanian officers will not be armed during their deployment and will be required to operate in full compliance with Luxembourg law.
