Unanimous voteSecond flood management plan accepted by Luxembourg City council

The main issue with the new plan seemed to be the question of whether it goes far enough or not.

LSAP’s Tom Krieps argued in favour of more water reserve basins, while The Left’s Guy Foetz wants additional measures to reduce flood risks. Foetz noted: “We have to revaluate where people can still build houses safely.”

Councilwoman Simone Beissel provided insight into the city’s reserve basins. There are 42 spread across the capital, out of which 27 are designed to counteract heavy rainfall. She further conveyed: “We are already planning a set of new basins, we have no other choice.”

DP’s Claude Radoux lamented that the risk plan is over 500 pages long and extremely technical: “It is hard to tell whether or not we are forgetting issues and we have to trust the experts.” Foetz believes the city council should have been included in the design of the prevention and emergency plans right from the beginning to avoid any ambiguities.
