On Wednesday afternoon, judges at the Court of Appeal exempted the man from his first sentence, namely a two year suspended prison sentence and a €1,000 fine.

The defendant and his brother had been prosecuted for trying to murder a well-known figure in the police and justice services just over five years ago. They had fought at night near a cafe in Esch-sur-Alzette, just before the victim was attacked with a machete.

For these acts, the defendant's brother was sentenced to ten years in prison, eight of which were suspended. He did not appeal this sentence.
