Chamber commissionSocial housing remains Luxembourg's problem child

RTL Today
It is hardly news that social housing is a bit of a problem in Luxembourg. It is therefore also not really surprising that the Court if Auditors' report in front of the Chamber commission revealed the same thing on Monday afternoon.

The Court of Auditors was missing some important pieces of information in order to properly conduct their review of the situation. They were only given a dataset by the ministry which is said to not be complete and is being called into question by some MPs. André Bauler from the Democratic Party put it diplomatically:

"It wasn't easy for the Court of Auditors. They can only work with the data they were given. It is obvious that given the material, it is a very complex dossier."

Sven Clement of the Pirate Party left it in no uncertain terms why he thinks that social housing is not having the effect it should have:

"We aren't building enough. We aren't building fats enough. And even the land at our disposal isn't being conversed quickly enough."

According to the Court of Auditors' report, the Fonds du Logement and the Société nationale d'habitation à bon marché (SNHBM) should receive more funding and should use the money at their disposal. Above all, they lack the necessary manpower to get things done.

Only 76% of their budget over the last 10 years was actually spent and even their preemptive purchase power is something they often don't make use of because they are lacking the necessary resources.
