The police intervened at Thionville train station on Wednesday around 8.45am following the discovery of what was initially described as a suspicious package.

As a result, the authorities were alerted. Consequently the TER88719 that connects Luxembourg to Metz was stopped and evacuated in order to allow the police to do their job.

After carrying out the necessary checks, the police decided not to use the bomb disposal unit.

Upon RTL’s request, the SNCF communication manager confirmed that it was a simple piece of abandoned luggage.

Understandably, the incident caused disturbances with delays of 30 to 60 minutes on the following trains, according to the CFL.

For its part, the SNCF has launched a call to users to avoid this kind of situation in the future: "We invite our customers to use the luggage tags available at all stations."

The reason? To allow SNCF personnel to distinguish a simple lost or abandoned suitcase from a suspicious package.
