Since July 2020, police had received numerous of reports from people all over the country that someone had broken into their car. The incidents usually took place in car parks located in front of supermarkets. The judicial police's organised crime department was able to identify two culprits.
During a stake-out in Sandweiler in mid-October, police were able to catch both individuals in the act and arrested them on the spot. They were then presented to an examining magistrate.
The culprits used a special transmitter to disrupt the radio connection between the key and the vehicle. The victims were thus unable to close their cars but remained fully unaware of this fact. While they were grocery shopping, the culprits raided their cars and left without leaving a trace.
