The "Natur- & Geopark Mullerthal" organisation announced on Tuesday that its application of November 2017 to join the UNESCO's network had been rejected.
Two UNESCO surveyors came to the region to evaluate the area as a geopark. However, the organisation's application was not accepted, as the region did not seem to have developed the concept as a geopark sufficiently. However, UNESCO did highlight the region's potential.
The organisation will now develop an action plan for a second application.
