The sky was largely clear this morning and the so-called "blood moon" was very visible (or rather not visible) in the night sky.

At exactly 5.41am, a shadow slowly started creeping across the moon. For almost an hour, the moon was completely in the earth's shadow and had a red gleam to it as a result.

The apex of today's lunar eclipse came at 6.12am and the whole spectacle lasted until about 6.45am.

Those who missed this lunar eclipse will have to wait a while before they see another one. The next "blood moons" will be visible on New Year's Eve 2028 and on 22 December 2029.
