The Luxembourg police dealt with a series of motorists driving under the influence, withdrawing a total of nine licences on Friday evening and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Shortly before 10pm in Esch-sur-Alzette, a police patrol noticed a driver accelerate so aggressively at a traffic light that he nearly lost control of his vehicle. A subsequent check revealed he was over the legal alcohol limit. His driving licence was confiscated and a complaint filed.

At around 2.30am, police on the A4 near Pontpierre received a report of a vehicle driving erratically. Officers intercepted the car shortly afterwards and breathalysed the driver, who tested positive. His licence was withdrawn on the spot and a complaint filed.

At around 3am, officers stopped a vehicle in Luxembourg City's Verlorenkost with a flat tyre. The driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol. His licence was confiscated and a complaint filed.

Shortly before 5am, a police patrol observed a car collide with a pole at a petrol station in Sanem. The driver was tested and found to be over the limit, resulting in the immediate withdrawal of his driving licence.

Alcohol checks

The night before, between 10pm and 11.30pm, police conducted a alcohol checkpoint in Sanem, stopping 230 motorists. Of these, seven tested positive: three received fines and four received formal reports, with two driving licences withdrawn on the spot.

On Saturday, between 12.30am and 2am, a further checkpoint in Differdange saw 59 motorists tested. Four tested positive: one received a fine and three received formal reports, with all three driving licences withdrawn
