
A 41-year-old motorist from Luxembourg was killed in a traffic accident near the German town of Mettlach on Whit Sunday.
The crash occurred on Sunday evening at around 8.40pm on the B 51 near Mettlach. On a stretch between Saarhölzbach and Mettlach, a car skidded on a long left-hand bend, left the roadway, rolled over, and caught fire.
According to the Merzig police, both occupants were thrown from the vehicle.
A 41-year-old man died at the scene. Police confirmed upon request that he was a Luxembourg national and resided in the Grand Duchy.
The other occupant, a 31-year-old man, was taken to a hospital in Saarbrücken by air ambulance. He also holds Luxembourg nationality but resides in Germany. As of Wednesday morning, he remained in hospital.
The car the two men were travelling in was registered in Germany. Several media outlets reported that neither occupant was likely wearing a seatbelt, though police would not confirm this on Wednesday.
The B 51 was closed until early Monday morning as a result of the accident. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances. Witnesses are asked to contact the Merzig police at +49 (0) 68617040.
