A man and a woman were found dead at their home on Rue Pierre-Ronsard in Sarreguemines on Tuesday 5 May, with investigators focusing on the possibility of a domestic homicide followed by suicide, according to Le Républicain Lorrain.
After the woman failed to appear at work on Monday, a close friend, concerned after not hearing from her for some time, alerted police. A patrol was sent to the couple's home, where both bodies were discovered in the kitchen.
The public prosecutor's office at the Sarreguemines court confirmed that the scene showed major signs of violence. The victim, aged 54, had sustained multiple stab wounds, including near the heart.
Her partner, aged 59, also had knife wounds, some of which were consistent with self-inflicted injuries. Both bodies have been transferred to the forensic institute in Strasbourg to determine the precise cause of death.
The couple, of German origin, had a 24-year-old child living abroad who was not present at the time of the incident. Neighbours described the family as discreet, though some recalled the man's behaviour as occasionally unsettling.
The prosecutor's office noted, however, that no history of domestic violence had been formally reported and that no prior complaints or police interventions had been recorded.
A murder investigation has been opened and entrusted to the Sarreguemines police station. Victim support has been made available to the family through a dedicated association.
According to the Collective against Femicides by Partners or Ex-Partners, (FPCE collective), this is the 33rd femicide recorded in France since the beginning of the year.
