The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has reported the first death linked to West Nile virus in the Utrecht province, confirming local transmission of the disease.
Female Aedes mosquitoes, notably the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), have been observed feeding on human blood. These mosquitoes are known to transmit diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya, the Zika virus, yellow fever, and the West Nile virus.

A person has died in the Netherlands after contracting the West Nile virus, the RIVM announced on Wednesday. According to the institute, the individual was infected within the country, providing clear evidence that the virus is now circulating locally.

The RIVM emphasises that most infections go unnoticed, with around eight out of ten people showing no symptoms. However, two additional patients are currently being treated in Dutch hospitals due to complications caused by the virus.

West Nile virus is spread by certain mosquito species. While most cases are mild and resemble flu-like symptoms, severe infections can lead to serious neurological issues such as meningitis or coma.

In neighbouring Belgium, the virus has already been detected in birds and a horse, suggesting it is also present in local wildlife. European health authorities are urging increased vigilance during the summer months, when mosquito activity is at its peak.
