Sophie Garel, a well-known French radio presenter and former representative for Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest, has died at the age of 84.

RTL France announced the death of the famous radio and television presenter on Thursday morning, citing family sources. From the 1960's onwards, Garel was one of the most recognisable voices on French radio and TV.

Although primarily known as a radio presenter, Garel began her career in television in her Algerian hometown of Oran. She later moved to Marseille and worked for Télé Monte-Carlo.

Over the course of her career, Garel also had several ties to Luxembourg. She represented the country at the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest in London, performing the song "Nous vivrons d'amour" alongside Chris Baldo, who was himself a presenter at Radio Luxembourg.

In the late 1970s, Garel began appearing on camera for Télé-Luxembourg. A few years later, she also hosted shows on RTL Télévision and RTL-TVI in France. Until 2007, she continued to present regular segments on France 2 and made appearances on Europe 1. Even after her retirement, she remained active as a guest host on radio until 2021.
