Irregular border crossings into the EU decreased significantly, especially across the Mediterranean, in the first four months of the year.
Around 29,000 people entered the EU without the correct papers or authorisations - the lowest number in years. In 2023, the number was 3 times as high.
According to the European border agency, "poor weather across the main migratory routes into the European Union was among the key factors behind a continued sharp drop in irregular border crossings".
The main route into Europe for many migrants is still the central Mediterranean. Most depart from Libya and arrive on the Italian coast. Another route goes via Turkey to Greece and Cyprus.
So far, 1,200 people have died while crossing the Mediterranean.
On June 12, the EU Pact on Immigration and Asylum will enter into force, strengthening external borders, speeding up asylum procedures, and ensuring solidarity among member states.
