Luxembourg’s Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) dispatched its specialist firefighting robot to neighbouring Germany after authorities in the Saarland region requested support to help bring a major forest fire under control in Illingen. The blaze, which broke out earlier this week, required the intervention of 300 German firefighters, and, while it was brought under control on Monday, extensive efforts continued to extinguish residual hotspots, CGDIS reported on Tuesday.
The Luxembourgish team, comprising four firefighters, set off on Monday evening, transporting both the robot and a fire engine to the scene. The robot was deployed in an area where unexploded munitions might still be buried underground, making conventional firefighting operations too risky. After working through the night in these hazardous conditions, a second team of six Luxembourg firefighters relieved the initial crew on Tuesday, with the mission scheduled to conclude by the evening.
Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden highlighted the significance of cross-border cooperation, noting that this situation once again demonstrates the vital importance of working together. He assured Reinhold Jost, Saarland’s Minister of the Interior, Public Works and Sport, of Luxembourg's full support, providing Germany with both the appropriate equipment and the experienced firefighters of CGDIS.
