Luxembourg was largely spared the severe weather events that had been forecast. In contrast, parts of France, especially the area surrounding Paris, were hit by powerful storms, hail, and torrential rain on Thursday evening.
Public transport faced temporary disruptions, trees were brought down onto roads, cellars were flooded, and in several cities parks were closed as a precaution. The French weather service, Meteo France, has issued an orange alert for 23 departments for Friday.
Germany’s national weather service has issued a warning for potentially severe thunderstorms on Friday, with the southeast of Bavaria expected to be particularly affected. Forecasters predict that more than 30 litres of rain per square metre could fall in a short period, accompanied by hail and wind gusts reaching between 100 and over 120 kilometres per hour.
Conditions are expected to calm gradually over the course of Friday afternoon.
