The European Central Bank (ECB) introduced the ten selected design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes on July 23. The final decision on the new banknotes' design is expected by the ECB's Governing Council around the end of this year. A public survey was launched alongside the design unveiling, urging euro area residents to help choose the currency’s future appearance.
Graphic designers were invited to submit design entries. These proposals were examined by an independent jury that decided on the final ten designs. These final entries, selected from over 1,200 proposals, were narrowed down to two main themes: European culture and natural heritage.
The survey, which will help decide on the final designs, will remain open until 21 September.
Alongside the public questionnaire, an identical survey will be run by an independent research company for a representative sample of euro area citizens, underlining the importance of public input and the overall inclusive approach the decision process aims for.
Following the design choice, the new banknotes will go into the next stage of development and testing before entering production. Beyond the new designs, further changes can be expected. It will include enhanced security features for better usability and authentication. The new design additionally aims to facilitate use for visually impaired people.
Scheduled to enter circulation in the following years. Previous series of euro banknotes will still retaining their value and continue alongside with the new series. The euro has not been completely redesigned since their issuance in 2002.
Reducing the environmental footprint of the banknotes is an additional goal of the ECB, as it focuses on durability and sustainable materials for the updated design.
