EXTRA TRAINS – Mobility Ministers Yuriko Backes and Jean-Luc Crucke announced to RTL that two additional commuter trains will run hourly between Marbehan, Belgium, and Luxembourg City starting in December, at peak-times to ease cross-border traffic. Talks also resumed on a long-delayed park-and-ride facility in Viville.
COMMEMORATION SERVICE – Luxembourg commemorated the 84th anniversary of forced Nazi conscription yesterday honouring thousands of young citizens sent to the Eastern Front and labour services during World War II. Speakers at the ceremonies emphasized the ongoing duty to actively defend modern democratic values against the rise of political extremism across Europe.
POLICE – The Police have reported that they were called out over 100 times on Saturday, to deal with a range of incidents from brawls and arguments to breaches of the night-time noise regulations in various parts of Luxembourg. They also carried out alcohol checks and in total 118 motorists were stopped, with 8 testing positive for alcohol.
WAR RESTARTS – The Middle East war has flared again for the first time in a month, with American strikes on Iran prompting retaliation from Tehran on Monday, who announced they attacked two US military air bases with ballistic missiles in Washington-allied Jordan, causing "heavy damage". Jordan's army has said it intercepted eight missiles, without stating their origin.
NEPAL BURIALS – Nepal has today been burying some of the hundreds of bodies retrieved after a deadly, tsunami-like flood crashed through the Himalayan region, sweeping away villages and leaving thousands still missing. The huge wave of ice, rocks and debris that smashed into villages and towns on Wednesday claimed at least 797 lives in both Nepal and Tibet, with reports of some bodies possibly swept downstream as far as India.
FERRY CAPSIZE – A passenger ferry capsized and sank off Northern Cyprus Sunday, killing at least eight people and leaving more than a dozen missing, officials and media reports said, as police took the captain and seven crew members into custody. Several rescued passengers told local media a blast had gone off at the bow of the ferry before it rolled over, and said the boat had an insufficient supply of life-vests.
DJOKOVIC OUT– Ailing Novak Djokovic suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in 20 years on Sunday, falling in five brutal sets to Mariano Navone in the first round of the US Open. The 48th-ranked Argentine's 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory ended Djokovic's latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title.
INDYCAR RECORD – Spain's Alex Palou clinched his fourth consecutive IndyCar Series title – and fifth in six seasons – on Sunday to cement his status as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the American competition. Palou finished 10th in the day's second race at Milwaukee – won by Mexican driver Pato O'Ward – to take an an insurmountable lead in the overall standings with one race remaining.
GOLF CHAMPIONS – World number one Scottie Scheffler produced a final day charge on Sunday to overhaul Viktor Hovland and win the PGA Tour Championship for the second time, carding a four-under-par 66 to finish on 16 under. While China's Yin Ruoning held her nerve to end her two-year title drought and claim the sixth LPGA Tour victory of her career with a two-shot triumph at the FM Championship on Sunday.
