Luxembourg

FATAL STABBINGA man has died following a stabbing in the town of Esch-sur-Alzette on Saturday afternoon. The 54-year-old victim was found unconscious and could not be revived despite resuscitation efforts by police and paramedics. A 42-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene and has since been placed in pre-trial detention. An autopsy has been ordered, and the investigation is ongoing.

MININSTER PREGNANCY – Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue is set to become the first serving minister in Luxembourg to have a child while in office. Her pregnancy has exposed a significant legal gap, as there are currently no maternity leave rules for members of government.

PHILHARMONIE EXTENSION The Philharmonie is to get a major extension, after recording nearly 225,000 visitors and over 660 events in 2025 alone. A new multipurpose hall, enlarged restaurant, and improved facilities are due to open by the end of 2027.

World

MIDDLE EAST WAR – A United Nations peacekeeper has been killed in southern Lebanon after an explosion, as fighting between Israeli forces and the Hezbollah militant group continues to escalate. The UN mission UNIFIL is leading an investigation into the incident, and has warned that any attack on its personnel constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law. Around 7,500 UN soldiers are currently stationed in the region, as Israel’s ground offensive in southern Lebanon continues.

Iran is continuing to respond to US and Israeli airstrikes with attacks on neighbouring countries. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates all reported their air defences were active overnight. In Kuwait, at least one worker was killed after an Iranian missile struck a building near a power plant. Over Saudi Arabia, five ballistic missiles were intercepted, believed to have been targeting an American air base. The International Atomic Energy Agency is reporting that a research reactor in Iran was severely damaged in the strikes and is no longer operational.

Pakistan has offered to host ceasefire talks between Iran and the United States. President Trump meanwhile claimed last night that Washington is already talking with entirely new people in Tehran. Iran has flatly denied holding any talks with the US.

UKRAINE WAR – In Ukraine, the city of Kramatorsk has been struck by multiple rockets, killing at least three people and injuring more than a dozen. Heavy clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces continue in the east of the country. Finland’s Prime Minister meanwhile confirmed that two drones which came down on Finnish territory over the weekend originated from Ukraine.

ART HEIST – Three paintings by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse have been stolen from an art foundation in the Italian province of Parma. Four suspects broke in through the main entrance before fleeing through a park with the works, estimated to be worth several million euros. An investigation is ongoing.

Sport

FOOTBALLLuxembourg’s national side are preparing for tomorrow’s Nations League playoff return leg against Malta at the sold-out Stade de Luxembourg, kick-off at 6pm. The Red Lions head into the match in a confident mood, having won the first leg 2-0 away. However, manager Jeff Strasser confirmed at last night’s press conference in Leudelange that Vincent Thill and goalkeepers Anthony Moris and Tiago Pereira are not fit to play. Goalkeeper Tim Kipps of Phönix Lübeck has been called up as cover.

In international friendlies, France beat Colombia 3-1 last night on their tour of the United States. Mexico and Portugal played out a goalless draw. And tonight, Germany take on Ghana.

CYCLING Jonas Vingegaard has claimed overall victory at the Tour of Catalonia. The final stage in Barcelona went to Australian Brady Gilmore. Luxembourg’s Bob Jungels abandoned the race, leaving compatriot Mats Wenzel as the best-placed Luxembourger in 103rd place.

TENNIS Aryna Sabalenka has won her second straight Miami Open title, beating Coco Gauff 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to complete a “Sunshine Double” Indian Wells-Miami sweep. Meanwhile World number two Jannik Sinner powered past Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4 to win in Miami for a second time on Sunday, adding the title to his Indian Wells crown.

FORMULA 1Kimi Antonelli has taken his second consecutive victory in the Japanese Grand Prix to become the youngest leader of the world championship in history at the age of 19.
The Mercedes driver finished first ahead of Oscar Piastri in second, who completed his first race this season for McClaren, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc taking the final third place on the podium.

Expect intermittent and light showers throughout the day. There’s little sunshine to report but the evening should be dry. Temperatures will start between 4–6°C in the morning, warming up to a maximum of 11°C in the afternoon.
