
FLOODING RISK – The police on Thursday issued an urgent appeal to motorists in Ettelbruck. Drivers who parked their cars in the town centre car park were told to move them immediately. The facility was eventually closed due to a significant risk of flooding in the area. Meanwhile, the Moselle river has breached alert level in Trier, reaching over six metres. German authorities are warning levels could hit seven metres by the weekend, with roads along the river expected to close.
PIRATE PARTY FINANCES – The Chamber of Deputies’ legal bureau has examined a special report on the Pirate Party’s finances, completed by the Court of Auditors, and filed an official complaint as a result over serious concerns that public funds given to the MPs for parliamentary work could have been misused. The two Pirate MPs Sven Clement and Marc Goergen have declined to comment.
UNISEX TOILETS DEBATE – Luxembourg’s Chamber has rejected a motion by the ADR party on separate school toilets while adopting anti-discrimination measures from the DP, CSV, and LSAP. Politicians across parties said they regretted the debate has become politicised due to poor government communication.
FILM FESTIVAL – The Luxembourg City Film Festival returns next month with British musician Pete Doherty serving on the international jury. The Libertines frontman will judge entries at the festival, which runs from the 5–15 March. This marks the event’s 16th edition.
MUNICH SECURITY CONFERENCE – The Munich Security Conference opens today with nearly 50 heads of state gathering to discuss global security challenges. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Among those attending are Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, and Ursula von der Leyen. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will deliver the opening address. Five thousand police have been deployed, with airspace over Munich closed.
UKRAINE WAR – Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine into Thursday, firing 24 ballistic missiles and over 200 drones. At least seven people were injured, including two children, with Kyiv among the cities hit.
STORM NILS – Spain, Portugal, and parts of France are bracing for Storm Nils, which is bringing heavy rain and strong winds from the Atlantic. Authorities have warned of flooding in areas still saturated from recent storms.
ISS MISSION – A new crew of four astronauts is due to launch to the International Space Station from Florida today. The SpaceX mission includes American, French, and Russian crew members. It follows the early return of four ISS astronauts in January for medical reasons.
TURKEY JEWELLERY HEIST – In Turkey, police have arrested a man following an audacious jewellery shop raid. The thief used a forklift to break into the store, filling his pockets with valuables in just 90 seconds. His choice of getaway vehicle proved less successful - a donkey. He was quickly apprehended by local police.
OLYMPICS – President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised the International Olympic Committee for disqualifying Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych over a helmet bearing images of athletes killed in the war, saying the decision plays “into the hands of agressors”.
In other Olympic news yesterday, American snowboard superstar Chloe Kim’s bid for a historic third consecutive gold ended in silver after South Korea’s 17-year-old Choi Gaon claimed victory in the halfpipe. Italy celebrated as Federica Brignone, at 35, became alpine skiing’s oldest ever Olympic champion, winning super-G gold. And Australia’s Cooper Woods took men’s moguls gold on a tiebreak.
Today’s medal events include the men’s 10km cross-country , women’s snowboard cross , Men’s 10km, biathlon sprint, men’s speed skating, men’s snowboard halfpipe, men’s skeleton, and men’s figure skating.
FOOTBALL – Yesterday’s Nations League draw set Luxembourg’s path: if the Red Lions beat Malta in March, they stay in League C games against Iceland, Bulgaria, and Estonia. If Luxembourg is relegated, they will play four matches against Andorra and either Gibraltar or Latvia.
In results from last night’s games, Arsenal‘s 1-1 draw with Brentford kept Manchester City’s title hopes alive, while Atletico Madrid crushed Copa del Rey holders Barcelona 4-0 in their semi-final first leg.
