PETROL PRICE INCREASE – Motorists are set for new fuel price increases at the pumps today. As of midnight, the price of a litre of 95-octane petrol increased by 2.1 cents. The cost now stands at €1.748 per litre. The price hike comes after recent increases for all other types of fuel.
STORY TWO – Luxembourg's economy has remained stable despite a less than reassuring global situaiton, according to a new report from Statec. Household spending, business confidence, and industrial activity are improving. However, food inflation is forecast at 2.1% this year. Statec also said that the next wage indexation is likely to occur in the third quarter of 2027. The report also notes that Luxembourg has suffered an exceptional drought, the consequences of which on economic activity are currently difficult to assess.
HOLIDAY TRAFFIC – The General German Automobile Club is warning motorists of heavy traffic on German motorways next weekend with Luxembourg’s A3 and A6 also likely to be affected. It says congestion will peak on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, as holidaymakers return home and others set off for weekend trips. Around 1,000 construction sites and road closures across Germany are expected to add to the delays.
DOLLY PARTON DEATH – Beloved country music icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80. The singer-songwriter was behind classics including Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You. Her unmistakable voice and songwriting made her one of the most celebrated artists of her generation. Her nephew confirmed her death yesterday, saying in a video posted on social media "Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus".
COUNTER TARIFFS – Canada has announced counter tariffs on US goods ranging from 15 to 50 percent, as a trade war intensifies between the historically close allies. Ottawa's tariffs will be introduced on 8 September. This follows US President Donald Trump's 50-percent duties on Canadian products that came into effect on Saturday. Canada's government also announced a $5.4 billion (CA$7.5 billion) aid package for impacted firms and workers.
ISRAELI INSURSON – United Nations chief António Guterres has condemned an incursion by Israeli forces on a training centre run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in an east Jerusalem suburb. "The Secretary-General is greatly alarmed at this development, as it will deprive young people of the vocational education they were receiving," spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. He added that the training centre "and other UNRWA premises are premises of the UN. They are inviolable and immune from any form of interference."
GOLF – The PGA Tour season from 2028 will culminate in a new matchplay tournament that pits the world's top golfers against one another across two weeks, chief executive officer Brian Rolapp announced yesterday. The latest in a series of major changes to golf's calendar intended to boost the sport's popularity, the new finale will feature 32 players based on final season-long standings. The announcement was immediately welcomed by Tiger Woods, who chaired the committee working on the reforms.
FOOTBALL – Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was crowned the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) player of the year as Manchester City's Khadija Shaw scooped the women's award for the second time. Portuguese international Fernandes broke the all-time record for Premier League assists during an outstanding individual 2025/26 season, setting up 21 goals as he surpassed Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's previous mark.
TENNIS – The dream team of Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz made a winning start but could not progress to the final stages of US Open's mixed doubles tournament. Williams, often considered the best women's tennis player in history, and Spain's seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Alcaraz fell to Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and Flavio Cobolli of Italy, 5-4, 4-1.
