THIONVILLE SELF-IMMOLATION – A 30-year-old woman has died in hospital after setting herself on fire in the centre of Thionville on Saturday evening. The woman parked her car, doused herself in petrol and set herself alight. A passer-by attempted to extinguish the flames, but she succumbed to her severe burns yesterday afternoon. The background to the incident remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched.

UKRAINE MARCH – Hundreds of people took to the streets of Luxembourg on Saturday in solidarity with the victims of Russia’s war against Ukraine, as Tuesday marks four years since the full-scale invasion began. The march, organised by the group LUkraine, drew people of many nationalities, ending at Clairefontaine square with speeches to honour those killed.

PORTUGAL AID – The Portuguese community in Luxembourg has sent a lorry full of aid to Portugal, in a show of solidarity following the country’s recent deadly floods and storms. The initiative, led by Luxembourg-based company Sopinor, saw building materials, tools and protective clothing dispatched to help families affected by the disaster.

World

EU FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING – EU foreign ministers meet in Brussels today to discuss Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Yesterday there were again massive Russian bombardments on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The situation in the Middle East is also on the agenda. Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel is attending.

NETHERLANDS GOVERNMENT The Netherlands swears in a new government today, with 38-year-old Rob Jetten becoming the country’s youngest and first openly gay prime minister, after his D66 party’s surprise election victory over Geert Wilders’ far-right Freedom Party.

US STORM – The north-eastern United States is bracing for a severe winter storm, with over 40 million people warned to expect heavy snowfall and powerful winds. Thousands of flights have been cancelled and schools shut, with major cities including Washington, Philadelphia and Boston all in the storm’s path. New York has imposed a complete shutdown of the city’s entire traffic network. It comes just weeks after a separate winter storm claimed the lives of 85 people across the country.

DUTERTE HEARING – The International Criminal Court begins a four-day hearing today to decide whether former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte should stand trial for crimes against humanity, linked to his deadly anti-drug crackdown that is thought to have killed thousands of people.

ATHLETICS – Luxembourg sprinter Patricia van der Weken has set a new national record over 60 metres, clocking 7.01 seconds at the Orlen Copernicus Cup in Poland. The time was good enough for second place, just behind Italian Zaynab Dosso.

WINTER OLYMPICS – The Winter Olympics closed in Verona yesterday, with the US claiming the final gold medal in ice hockey against Canada. Norway topped the overall medal standings, with the US in second place.

FOOTBALL – In Sunday’s football, Strasbourg beat Lyon 3-1 in Ligue 1, while Lille edged Angers 1-0. In the Premier League, Arsenal thrashed Tottenham 4-1, Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-1, and Liverpool won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. In Luxembourg football this weekend, league leaders Differdange thrashed Rodange 6-0. Strassen won 4-0 in Pétange and are back in 2nd place. Canach and Hesperange drew 0-0. Dudelange lost 3-1to Mamer. Hesperange beat Kaerjeng 2-1. Mondorf beat Bissen 2-1. And Roodt Syre also won 2-1, against Niederkorn.

Weather

While the sky will clear up from time to time, it will remain mostly overcast. At least you won’t need an umbrella all day, but do watch out, light showers may pop up during the day, with more persistent rain expected as we head into the evening. Temperatures range from 7–9°C this morning before climbing to12°C in the afternoon.
