Unions call on PM Frieden to convene tripartite over ArcelorMittal restructuring

The OGBL and the LCGB have urged Prime Minister Luc Frieden to call a tripartite meeting following the announcement that ArcelorMittal’s European restructuring could relocate up to 1,050 jobs from the country.

According to ArcelorMittal management, a feasibility study is currently underway. In response, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) have sent a letter – dated 5 February and reviewed by RTL – to Prime Minister Frieden. In it, the unions urge him to organise a tripartite meeting dedicated to the steel industry.

While the current Lux2030 agreement, which defines the group’s strategic direction, has been extended until 31 March, the unions are calling for greater transparency regarding the company’s future plans. They insist that the Prime Minister take personal charge of the matter in order to safeguard affected jobs and preserve Luxembourg’s steel industry.

Luxembourg Airport to undergo €1 billion upgrade

  • Growth at Findel shows no signs of slowing: Last year, 5.3 million passengers travelled via Luxembourg Airport, and that record is expected to be broken again this year. Over the next six years, not only the passenger terminal but much of the site is set to undergo significant modernisation.
  • On the site where operations began in 1946, a new terminal for VIP and private aviation could be completed by 2029. These investments are intended to ensure that Luxembourg continues to play a central role in passenger and cargo transport within the Greater Region.
