Whether you want to call them folk-inspired indie rock or indie-spirited folk music, one thing is clear: Big Thief have carved a singular sonic niche for themselves.
Lo-fi at times, often raw in tone, and yet refined and delicate, the Brooklyn trio's sound veers between psychedelia, American-style folksiness, and distortion-heavy guitar riffs. But lead vocalist Adrianne Lenker's lyrics always shine through – autobiographical, piercing, totally distinctive.
With Big Thief, Lenker is joined by Buck Meek on guitar and drummer James Krivchenia, all of whom attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
The former fourth member of the band, Max Oleartchik, parted ways with Big Thief in 2024 citing interpersonal reasons, and so the trio are joined by bassist Joshua Crumbly during live performances.
Since their inception, the indie folk outfit have been nominated for numerous Grammy Award for both their albums and songs. Their latest album, Double Infinity (2025), makes a strong addition to their already exceptional discography, topping many publications' end-of-year lists – and being a favourite amongst many of RTL Today Radio's hosts.

Currently on a European tour, Big Thief have a show scheduled in Luxembourg later this month. Following this stint, they will once again tour North America from August to October – with many of those shows having already sold out.
RTL Today Radio are giving away two tickets to Big Thief at den Atelier on Thursday, 18 June.
