Andrew Abdo has quit as chief executive of the National Rugby League and will take up a new role as head of Tennis Australia, according to media reports Monday.

Abdo has steered the hugely popular NRL over almost six years in which the sport has drawn record TV ratings and major expansions in Papua New Guinea and western Australia.

He will succeed Craig Tiley as the head of Tennis Australia, The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers reported.

Tiley announced in February that was leaving Tennis Australia after a "transformative" tenure to become the head of the United States Tennis Association.

Australian Rugby League commissioner Peter V'landys will take over from Abdo, the reports said.
