Brazilian Rafael Camara will be heading into the unknown when he makes his Formula One debut for Haas in his 'home' race at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix this weekend.
Not only has he no previous experience of racing in F1, but he has never raced at the famous Interlagos circuit.
"I was very surprised to be given this chance," he said on Thursday. "I am just very happy for the opportunity – and very grateful to the team for trusting me.
"I will try to enjoy it as a home race and have some fun out there!"
"It's my first time driving here and in F1," he said. "For now, it's ok! I think it should be alright."
The Ferrari Academy driver was set to take Charles Leclerc's car in Friday's opening free practice until called up by Haas, after the demotion of Esteban Ocon in Mexico.
Camara, 21, was already set to replace Ocon next year.
Veteran Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa stood in for the dropped Ocon last weekend in Mexico and finished 10th.
Camara will partner Oliver Bearman who has had a strong season.
"In the past year, Ollie has done a good job always," said Camara. "I will try to learn as much as I can with him."
Haas have not yet said whether Camara will drive the final races of the season - if they take place.
Camara leads the Formula Two championship which also has two races to go. Those are due to be run alongside F1 Grands Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, but both events are in jeopardy from the conflict in the Middle East.
