Esch-sur-Alzette celebrated the 20th edition of its renowned Kulturlaf on Saturday, attracting an unprecedented 3,500 participants to the starting line, among them 250 children.

The event began shortly after 5pm with the children’s race, followed at 6pm by the start of the half-marathon, 10-mile, and 10-kilometre courses.

From its inception, the Kulturlaf has aimed to offer not only an engaging sporting challenge but also to showcase Esch’s unique architecture and vibrant cultural scene.

Race organiser Pol Zimmermann expressed his delight at this year’s turnout, confirming that the 2026 edition set a new all-time record for registrations.

However, he noted that the event has now reached its capacity limit and cannot accommodate more runners in future editions.

Warm, sunny weather and the distinctive backdrop of Belval contributed to a lively and positive atmosphere both on the course and among spectators.

Among the runners was Julien Henx, who suffered a serious accident last year. Determined to tackle the challenge of the Escher Kulturlaf, he used this race to test whether his leg had fully recovered.

Next week, he plans to resume swimming training.

The 21st edition of the Escher Kulturlaf is scheduled for 4 September 2027. Given the high demand for places, as seen this year, organisers are encouraging would-be participants to register early.
