Jeunesse Esch and FC Atert Bissen faced each other on Sunday evening as part of the second matchday of the BGL Ligue, with Bissen emerging as 2-0 winners.
However, the aftermath was overshadowed by reports from FC Atert Bissen that their club members had been assaulted and injured during altercations after the match, with their flags having been stolen.
In statements on Facebook and Instagram, Bissen condemned the incidents, describing them as unacceptable in any football stadium.
According to Jeunesse Esch officials, no police officers were dispatched to Stade de la Frontière on Sunday night, a claim the police also confirmed, stating they had no record of an intervention related to this match.
Jeunesse Esch president Marc Theisen told RTL he was "surprised" by the reports of violence. Although he was not present at the match, Theisen said the club would launch an internal investigation to clarify the circumstances and, if necessary, take appropriate action.
He confirmed that he was informed that, among other incidents, a Bissen flag had been burned.
In an official statement released on Monday afternoon, Jeunesse Esch reiterated its condemnation of all forms of violence, whether inside or outside the football ground.
The club further noted that its officials remained at the stadium until around 11pm and observed nothing that matched the description of the incident posted by FC Atert Bissen.
According to Jeunesse, no police call-outs were reported, and no Bissen officials approached them to discuss or report the matter before their departure at 11pm.
Jeunesse Esch also criticised FC Atert Bissen’s decision to go public through social media rather than communicate directly. The Esch club stressed it remains open to direct dialogue in order to clarify the events.
So far, FC Atert Bissen has not responded to RTL’s request for comment regarding the incident.
