Eight swimmers are representing Luxembourg at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, with six of them taking to the pool on Monday. Despite strong efforts, none managed to progress to the semi-finals in their opening events.
In the men's 50m butterfly, Julien Henx, Remi Fabiani, and Florian Frippiat lined up in a bid to reach the semi-finals. In the end, none of them made it through. Frippiat did come third in his individual heat, but qualification is determined solely on time rather than by placing.
Frippiat clocked 24.56 seconds, Henx 24.17 seconds and Fabiani 24.37 seconds. In some cases, the qualifying times were nearly two seconds quicker. The fastest man in qualifying was France's Maxime Grousset, with a time of 22.49 seconds. The slowest qualifying time was set by Nikita Baez, who covered the 50 metres in 23.31 seconds.
In the 100m breaststroke shortly afterwards, Finn Kemp and Joao Carneiro took to the pool. Kemp came second in his heat, but his time of 1:01.85 was not fast enough to reach the semi-finals. In the same heat, Carneiro finished seventh of the ten swimmers on 1:02.60. The quickest qualifying time was set by Britain's Adam Ramsay-Peaty in 59.08 seconds. The slowest qualifying time was posted by Norway's Charlie Egeland, who touched in 1:00.13.
In the 800m freestyle, Lou Jominet was the first Luxembourg woman in action, starting around midday. In the first heat, she finished second of three starters in a time of 9:01.38, which left her behind the qualifying times, which ranged from 8:23.17, set by Simona Quadarella from Italy, to 8:36.7, set by Maria Valdes Alvarez from Spain.
