Swiss authorities have confirmed that a serious accident involving a coach took place on Thursday afternoon in the canton of Graubünden, eastern Switzerland, resulting in five fatalities and multiple injuries.
The crash occurred at approximately 4.15pm on a stretch of road between Susch and Zernez, in an area affected by roadworks. According to Swiss media, the vehicle involved was a Dutch tour bus, which struck the roadside barrier before overturning and coming to rest on its side in a ditch. No other vehicles were involved. The Federation of Dutch Travel Companies has since confirmed that the coach was carrying 48 people on holiday in Austria, and that, at he time of the crash, it was returning from a day trip to Switzerland.
Emergency services responded in large numbers, with several rescue teams and five helicopters deployed to the scene. Authorities remain in close contact with the bus company and are working to inform the families of those involved. The director of the coach company is expected to travel to the site of the crash on Friday.
