Only 30% of EU citizens lived in rented housing, the study determined. The data indicates that Luxembourg placed just below the European average at 68.4% homeowners. 31.6% of Luxembourg residents lived in rented housing in 2020.
The biggest percentage of homeowners last year could be found in Romania (96%), in Slovakia (92%), as well as in Croatia and Hungary at 91.3% each – thus, mainly in eastern Europe. Luxembourg’s neighbouring country Germany is far behind the rest of the EU at only 50.5% homeowners.
Looking at the European average, 53% of people lived in a house, compared to 46% who lived in a flat. 1% of people have “alternative housing”, e.g., caravans or houseboats. In Luxembourg, 58.8% of people live in a house, compared to 40% who live in a flat. The highest percentage of house inhabitants was observed in Ireland: 92% of the Emerald Isle’s residents live in houses. Spain, on the other hand, had the largest percentage of flat inhabitants at 66.1%.
Luxembourg’s residents will not be surprised to hear that Eurostat also determined that the Grand Duchy was among the countries with the highest housing prices in Europe in 2020. In Luxembourg, prices – which include costs for water, electricity, and heating – were about 64% above the EU average in 2020. The only countries with even higher housing prices were Ireland and Denmark.
