Minister of Foreign Affairs Asselborn meets young Afghan on way to Luxembourg at Budapest airport

RTL Today
Minister Jean Asselborn travelled to the Hungarian capital earlier this week, where he held meetings with dignitaries such as mayor Gergely Karácsony.

On his way home to Luxembourg, Asselborn came across a young Afghanistan national named Tahira, who escaped her home country at the end of August on one of the last evacuation flights out of Kabul. She is currently travelling to Luxembourg, where she will begin the asylum process, after spending the last few weeks detained in Hungary.

Minister Asselborn shared the encounter in a post on

Facebook.

He published a photo of the two, accompanied by the following caption:

“There are still glimmers of light in the drama around Afghanistan and we, in Luxembourg, are putting all our efforts into making them happen. The better side of the day-to-day life of someone who is responsible for asylum.”

The Taliban quickly took control of Afghanistan in August after US troops withdrew from the country. The Afghan capital of Kabul fell in mid-August, leading to dramatic scenes at the airport as thousands sought to flee.
